Five unique wellness therapies to transform your health

28/02/2025

There’s more to managing your wellness than attending yoga classes and quaffing green juice. Beyond the regular approach to wellbeing lies an often-overlooked world of holistic therapies that call on age-old healing traditions. These five unique wellness therapies may seem a little left of field, but for those ready to push the limits of wellness, they might just be the missing piece of the puzzle.

1. Reiki

Reiki, developed in late 19th-century Japan, is a gentle healing practice aimed at relieving stress and promoting healing. What is Reiki healing? Using light touch or hovering hands, practitioners help restore the body's natural energy flow, clearing blockages and encouraging balance. Many people describe Reiki as a deeply relaxing experience that feels a little like a physical and emotional reset. Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, and while it may seem a little unusual at first, advocates of the practice say it leaves them with a sense of calm and mental clarity.

2. Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient healing system that views wellness as a balance between body, mind, and spirit. What makes it so unique is its deeply personal approach. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution here; instead, Ayurveda recognises that we all have a unique constitution (dosha) and tailors an approach that can encompass everything from diet and herbs to mindfulness and Ayurvedic aromatherapy rituals, based on your specific needs. If you’re over generic health advice and looking for something that feels more aligned with who you are, Ayurveda offers a refreshingly individual path to wellness.

3. Kinesiology

Kinesiology explores the connection between your muscles and mind, using muscle testing to pinpoint imbalances that might be affecting your physical, emotional, or mental wellbeing. It’s a process that uses muscle responses (like biofeedback) to identify, address, and alleviate the root causes of stress or discomfort. Gentle and hands-on, kinesiology healing is a great tool for releasing tension and supporting overall wellness, especially for those looking for a more holistic, whole-body approach to health.

4. Sound Therapy

If you've ever felt a sense of calm listening to the delicate jangle of wind chimes or the deep, steady hum of a Tibetan singing bowl, then you’ve already dipped your toes into the world of sound therapy. Like a sonic massage for your mind, sound therapy uses waves of sound that are designed to soothe and rebalance. Whether it’s the gentle strum of a harp, the rhythmic beat of a drum, or the pure tones of crystal bowls or chimes, sound healing taps into something primal and is a simple yet powerful way to shake off stress and quiet the noise in your head.

5. Shinrin-yoku

Forest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku, is one of those beautifully simple ideas that just makes sense. Born in Japan, it’s all about slowing down and letting the world around you do the heavy lifting. There’s no need to work up a sweat either, as it's less about hiking and more about slowing down, tuning in with all senses, and letting nature work its magic. Gaining popularity the world over, researchers have established that just 15 minutes of this conscious and contemplative immersion in nature lowers cortisol levels, heart rate and blood pressure, improves sleep, and boosts the immune system. The practice has gained global attention, with doctors now prescribing nature as a treatment for a variety of health issues.
